March 9: The Civil Ceremony
The way people are married in the Netherlands is somewhat different
than it is in the U.S. In the Netherlands, the only legally recognized
marriage is a civil ceremony, usually carried out in City Hall. A
marriage that is only performed in a church is not legally
recognized. Because we want to get married in church, we have to get
married twice. First, the legal marriage in City Hall on
March 9, and next, the religious marriage on
March 10.
The civil ceremony will start at 3:00 pm, in the City Hall (see the
picture on the right) of Enschede. This is a public ceremony, and
everybody is welcome to attend.
